Faridian Carpets – Traditional Art from the Mountains of Iran
Faridian rugs are part of a long-standing weaving tradition that developed in western Iran, a mountainous region home to diverse communities, including the Bakhtiari tribe and the Armenian population. This region is known for its cold climate, which affects the quality of the local wool, which is thick, durable and soft to the touch – a key ingredient in the rugs woven there.
Raw materials and weaving technique
The carpets are hand-woven using high-quality wool, usually on a cotton base, using the Turkish (symmetrical) knot method, which gives the carpet high durability over the years. The carpet colors are mainly derived from natural dyes, creating rich shades of deep red, dark blue, ivory, gold and green , along with touches of brown and black to emphasize the patterns.
Design and features
Fridian rugs feature a combination of geometric patterns and traditional motifs inspired by nature, such as flowers, trees, and shrubs. Notable patterns include:
- "Garden" (Kheshti) models – squares or rhombuses with unique decorations on each one.
- Central medallion – a classical style common in the region.
- Semi-geometric decorations characteristic of the Bakhtiari tradition.
Fridian and the surrounding communities
Faridian is a region with a rich history, characterized by a strong connection to the weaving tradition. Alongside the Bakhtiari tribe, an Armenian community lived there for centuries and influenced the local art style, including the carpets woven there, which are considered to be of particularly high quality, thanks to the carefully processed wool and the use of balanced shades.
Fridian rugs in the modern home
Although woven into centuries-old tradition, Fridian rugs also blend well with modern design. The combination of natural colors with classic patterns allows them to blend into both traditional and contemporary spaces, adding warmth and character to any room.

Carpet cleaning and maintenance tips
Once a month, it is advisable to turn the carpet over on its back, and if possible, do so on a balcony in the sun, so that the moisture on the back of the carpet can dry. It is advisable to vacuum the carpet once a week or once every two weeks.
Treating liquid stains
Soak up the stains with a towel or absorbent paper as much as possible. Then go over the area with a wet rag or damp cloth to dilute the spilled liquid. It is recommended to have the carpet professionally cleaned, which is thorough and deep, every two years.
