Choosing a Carpet Size: The Complete Guide

With decades of experience in helping you design your spaces, we have plenty of advice and knowledge on how to get it right when it comes to rug size. Here's a guide to choosing your ideal rug for any type of space.

How to choose a standard size ready-made carpet

Have you found the perfect rug design, do you have a large or medium-sized living room? Now it's time to find the right size rug. The right size rug can make all the difference in a space. When adding a rug to your home, its quality and style aren't the only factors - size matters too. Choosing the right size rug can make your design look more cohesive and harmonious.

All sizes have their place, from small bedside rugs to large living room rugs that unify the sofa and coffee table area. To ensure a rug fits well, take accurate measurements of your home before purchasing.

Small or medium-sized living room

You can find out what size carpet will fit using the following tip:

Do you have a sofa that is 200 cm long? So a 140x200 cm rug (size M) will fit perfectly because its length is equal to or close to the length of the sofa, and then no empty spaces will be created on the sides of the sofa, so the rug can be adjusted to sofas of different lengths.

Large living room

Large rugs create a cozy feel in large rooms, while also making smaller rooms feel more spacious. Choose a size between 200X290 (size XL) and 240X330 (size XXL) that will allow all four legs of the furniture to rest comfortably on the rug (sofa, armchair, etc.).

Sofa 220 cm long A 160x230 cm rug (size L) will fit it.
Sofa 280 cm long A 200x290 cm rug (size XL) will fit it.
Sofa 320 cm long A rug measuring 240x330 cm (size XXL) will fit it.
Design tip If you wish and there is enough space in the space, you can choose one size larger and place the rug under the furniture. The result will be that the rug will become the focal point of the room, will be more visible and will be a larger part of the space's design!

dining room

Which rugs are suitable for your dining room? The answer is flat-weave rugs or short-pile rugs. They make it easier to pull and drag chairs, as well as vacuum and clean.

As for the size of the rug, it should also be 60 to 80 cm longer on each side of the table, so that there is room to move the table legs without them getting caught on the edges of the rug when dragging the rug in and out.

Dining table rug size

Dining table with 2 chairs If you have limited space for your dining table, or maybe even no dining room at all, you can still place a small rug under the dining table or a small bistro that shares space with the kitchen. A 120x180 cm rug (size S) can fit perfectly.
Dining table with 4 chairs A dining table with seating for four tends to be 90x90 cm in diameter for a round table. In this case, it is recommended to choose a rectangular rug measuring 160x230 cm (size L) or a round rug measuring 160X160 (size L) or 200X200 cm (size XL).
Dining table with 6 chairs A six-seater dining table typically measures 150x90 cm. For a table of this size, a rectangular rug of 200x290 cm (size XL) or 240x330 cm (size XXL) is recommended. Both of these sizes will allow enough room to move the chairs back and still sit fully on the rug.
Dining table with 8 chairs A dining table for eight people is the most common in homes. The larger tables measure around 90x180 cm or 120x180 cm. For these sizes, it is recommended to choose a rectangular rug measuring 240x330 cm (XXL size).
Dining table with 10 chairs If you have space for a more elaborate dining room, you may be able to fit a 10-seater dining table, measuring 120x300 cm. A rectangular rug measuring 300x400 cm (size XXXL) is best suited for a table of this size. This table and rug combination is perfect for large dining rooms and hosting dinner parties.

The bedroom

How fun it is to get out of a warm bed in the morning and put your feet on a soft, cozy rug! A rug adds a cozy feel and dampens sound levels, so it improves your sleeping environment and increases the chances of a good night's sleep.

Important tip If you want a larger rug under the bed, such as 160X230 cm (size L) or 200X290 cm (size XL), it should extend at least 50 cm from the outer edge of the bed.
If you choose to place a small rug next to the bed, it is recommended to add a non-slip underlay, especially important so that it remains stable in place and does not slip.

Bedroom carpets

Smaller bedroom With runner rugs, you can enjoy the cozy feeling of a rug under your feet in the morning without covering the entire floor. Place a 80X200 cm runner rug (size XS) on each side of the double bed, making sure they are long enough to cover the area where you will place your feet when you get out of bed.
Large bedroom A spacious bedroom with a double bed requires a larger rug. Place the bed and bedside tables on a large rug to create a uniform border around the bed. Depending on the size of the bed, rugs that are 240 cm long or longer are best - 240X330 cm (size XXL). Alternatively, you can choose a slightly smaller rug and place three quarters of the bed on it so that the edges of the bed are covered - 200X290 cm (size XL).
Single bed For a smaller bedroom with a single bed, it is recommended to choose a medium-sized rectangular rug 160X230 cm (size L). Position the rug so that two-thirds of it is under the bed, leaving some of the rug visible in front and on the sides of the bed. This placement adds warmth to the room and creates an organized and tidy look.

Entrance and hallway

First, you will need to buy an entrance rug, which will collect all the dirt that your shoes bring in. If there is space, you can place a slightly larger hallway rug inside - (140X200, 120X180).

Remember that the carpet needs to be durable because the hallway is one of the most frequently used areas of the house.

Important tip! Always use an anti-slip pad on the bottom of rugs in high-traffic areas of the home/office, such as the hallway, for added safety.

Guidelines for placing a runner rug in the hallway

Leave space at the edges - It is important to leave some bare floor between the runner rug and the walls at both ends of the hallway. As a rule of thumb, leave about 6cm of bare space at each end, but this adjustment may vary depending on the size of the hallway.

Consider doorways - If your hallway has doorways along its length, choose a runner that stops in front of the doorways. This will allow for easy opening and closing of the doors without the rug getting in the way.
